The Reich is most humbled and honored by the trust Präsidentin Warren has placed in us, and would like to put forth distinguished SS-Obergruppenführer Stefan Ramseur, recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, with swords and oak leaves, for service in the Theocratic Revolt and the Columbia-Hightah conflict, as nominee.

We have no doubt that, as secretary, he will continue to exercise his impeccable administrative skills and, if necessary, talents for strategic and tactical command.

Heil Warren! Ehre, Amerikanisches Reiches! Ehre, Confederates!

The modern French Foreign Legion pretty much just takes volunteers and, of course, doesn't rely on colonialism, but it still exists and has fought in Afghanistan most recently.

It's a very strange thing but, essentially, any man of suitable age can, if they can get to France, find a gendarme and ask to join. They're taken to a recruitment center and assessed. If they're not disqualified based on the physical, they can join, and are permitted to change their name -- and not have any records of their previous identity kept.

They don't need to even speak French, since they're taught as part of the training. It's pretty much a way for desperate men to start a new life -- after, IIRC five years of service, they're discharged as French citizens and receive a pension.

Not surprisingly they're often a bunch of criminals or fugitives, though some are surely just adventure-seeking dudes, or have for whatever odd reason run out of options in their native country.

But historically, yes, it was troops from French imperial possessions/colonies. And a fictional version could be different.

But TL;DR the idea doesn't require colonies.

Here's a Chinese legionnaire in Afghanistan for ex. :

Anyway, @ Turkducken, I don't see any reason why an RP set in a country outside the NCSA couldn't be done. The only real restriction I know of there is that we can't claim territory outside the NCSA -- it doesn't mean the rest of the world is supposed to not exist, and I think it is assumed that States trade with foreign countries.

Support Weapons of the SS and Wehrmacht

Pak (Panzerabwehrkanone) 43 Ausf. III

Weight: 9.5 tons
Length: 26'
Barrel length: 21'
Caliber: 88x671mm
Action: Horizontal semi-automatic sliding block
Feed: Manual
Muzzle-velocity: 5,700 ft/s (APDS); 3,900 ft/s (HE)
Field-tested rate of fire: 8 rounds/minute

Features: Hydropneumatic recoil-absorption system; magnifying, night-vision, or IR sights; automated target tracking via laser designation; GPS-guided targeting for artillery support

Notes: This is a rifled version of the 88mm gun mounted on the Tiger VII, and thus fires pointed tungsten rods in the anti-tank role role, rather than the tank's APFSDS finned tungsten darts. Rifling was deemed necessary in order for it to serve adequately in its secondary role as artillery support with HE and HE fragmentation rounds, and, though the APDS rounds are slightly less accurate, the spin initiated by the casing engaging rifling prior to separation from the projectile does provide adequate stability.

While a split-trail carriage was previously employed, it was found to inhibit the movement of the SWS towing vehicles necessary to deploy this gun. The four-wheeled carriage allows the towing vehicle almost complete freedom of movement within its own capabilities, and may be folded such that the gun is lowered and rests upon the bars of the carriage, rather than its wheels. This lowers its profile for emplacement in defensive positions.

A further benefit of this carriage is that it allows 360-degree traversal at a rapid rate, and the gun can thus track a target moving at a transverse heading far more easily. It can also elevate to 40 degrees and depress by 15 degrees.

The Reichsmarschall laughed goodnaturedly. "Well, I would say I must decline, but since you did make this much easier than I'd expected, I can't decline. I hope it is alright if my driver and secretary ...

"Ah, so rude of me." He gestured to the companions he'd mentioned in respective turn. "May I introduce Oberleutnant Heinz Kirchner, and staboffizier Emily Schwarz."

The two gave smart Roman salutes, apparently not taking their marschall's cue very well, but otherwise smiled and appeared sincere in making their obeisance.

Kirkland resumed: "As I was saying, I hope you wouldn't mind if they joined us. I would be entirely remiss and quite discourteous to deny two faithful soldaten, who have endured the trials of combat with me, any comfort that I would accept myself."

He followed quickly and rather dismissively, with a tiny wave of his hand, with another deep laugh. "Oh and of course the rail terminals can be wherever you wish; we wouldn't want them to be anything less than optimal for trade; that would quite defeat the purpose, yes?"

((Sorry not self-bumping, but in retrospect this should probably be in NS, if a mod could move it? ))

((So as not to waste this space ...))

In his bedroom atop a tower of the newly-constructed, majestic Bergenschloss, William Winsbury bristled under the unflinching and almost-challenging gazes of Reichsführer-General zur Linde and Reichsführerin-SS Habich. Tailors fluttered around him, measuring and holding up swatches of rich material -- silk, sable, ermine, and cloth-of-gold -- as they prepared to sew his coronation raiment. Elsewhere in the castle, jewelers and goldsmiths were equally hard at work preparing the appropriate regalia of princedom.

Of course the girlishly-handsome, red-haired young man understood very clearly that he was not, and would not become, their equal, except perhaps at social occasions -- and, even then, the old aristocracy of Northeast Carolina and Prussia would likely view him as an up-jumped peasant.

As he stood statue-still and stared coldly into a full-length mirror, he reflected that they would not be wrong. He may have been an exceptional person, and certainly regarded himself as such: Beautiful, though not in a way that was much respected in Hightah, where ideals of the male form tended towards red-blooded, bull-necked, dirty farmhands; clever, in a place that put little value on intellect; and proudly self-assured, where self-abasing Christian humility was more virtuous.

If his bitterness over these things showed, he didn't suppose the führers much cared. In fact, it was that disaffection that made him a perfect ally, and had led him to embrace the National Socialists as they had occupied his homeland. Still, Albrecht zur Linde looked gloatingly proud, and not of William, whilst Reinhilde Habich barely concealed a sort of patronizing contempt. They made no pretense when it came to who would truly rule Hightah, if the omnipresent SS-Leibstandarte weren't enough to cow him to submission.

NationStates / Amerikanisches Reich to Crown Prince of Hightah

Völkischer Beobachter News Service Reports

Elsbethburg, AR

Following the military occupation by the Reich of Hightah and its subsequent dissolution, the Reich nobly and magnanimously plans to appoint a native regent of the territory who will be granted certain rights as a nominal sovereign.

The leading candidate is William Winsbury, who cooperated most willfully and enthusiastically during the advance of Reich forces across the territory in their limited role in the NCSA Civil War.

It should be qualified that "Civil War" is considered a loaded term by many and that, as military action goes, the actions of the Reich amounted to less than a thousand casualties.

According to plans, Winsbury will be established in the Reich/Hightah border town of Bergenschloss, and afforded, as the name suggests, a residence suitable to a prince of a major territory. The Beobachter has obtained inside information that this project is of high priority to the Reich and is hoped to constitute a great architectural achievement.

He and his family will be granted hereditary rights subject to the approval of the Reichstag of the Reich, and its leaders. They will be permitted a personal guard not to exceed five-hundred personnel, subject to review by officers of the Reich's SS.

The military of the Reich will be granted free transit over the territory of Hightah, under the agreement to be signed by Prince William, and the Reich's SS to be responsible for policing concerns related to the security of the state.

Coronation will be take place at a date to be announced, which it is hoped that the monarchs of the NCSA will attend.

Map Requests / Re: Amerikanisches Reich Expansion Request
« on: August 29, 2015, 07:31:05 pm »
Bump? It was super occupied in RP and I haven't had an expansion yet ... I'm not OOCly greedy for territory but that was the IC agenda of the AR ;p . A 'yes' or 'no' answer would be much appreciated, and I definitely won't be offended if there is a good reason for a 'no' :) .

I should note that the RP appointment of a feudal Prince of Hightah is really the installation of a puppet ruler by the Reich who might be acceptable to the locals, and not intended to give it real autonomy, despite propaganda to the contrary.

Reichsmarschall Kirkland looked around with an inscrutable expression, as usual, though anyone accustomed to his subtleties would note that he seemed impressed as he surveyed the fields.

"And I'm sure the produce is admirable. My own ancestor was, believe it or not, a general of the First Confederacy from North Carolina, who fought at First Manassas, in the Shenandoah campaign, and attained his highest rank at Gettysburg: William Whedbee Kirkland, for whom I was named. So, we are not so far removed as you might think, despite my also Germanic ancestry, from the Prussian side of my family."

Kirkland took a coffee with a gracious nod, and sipped it decorously.

"And yes, of course, our goal is peace ... peace, and Hightah, though the latter is up to the discretion of the central government. Of your own territory, despite ... ;" Here Kirkland cleared his throat and had the decency to look aside, his emotions for once plain, as he was slightly abashed; "... the overwhelming force of arms that the Reich could bring to bear, begging your humble pardon, we would claim none.

"None the less, you must understand, the Reichsführer-General and Reichsführerin-SS demand that I obtain an unconditional surrender, for precisely that reason. I have negotiated most carefully with them, with your interests and the desirability of peace in mind, and am willing to present you with terms, but ...;" he sighed; "... most lamentably, I am not precisely sanctioned to negotiate. You -- and I am honestly sorry for this -- must either accept or reject. Rejection ..."

Kirkland left the rest unspoken, as he motioned his secretary to bring forth the writing kit and prepared papers.

2) No claim shall be made by the Columbia Confederates upon the Territory of Hightah, which is justly claimed, by right of conquest and necessity, by the Reich.

3) Reich and Columbian armed forces shall be granted free conduct and transit, though not free action, in the respective territories and airspace, that is, the territories and airspace of Columbia and the Reich, mutually.

4) The State of the Columbia Confederates shall never in perpetuity exercise any claim nor attempt any dominance or governance over the territory, or former territory, of Hightah.

5) Betwixt the Amerikanisches Reich and the State of the Columbia Confederates there shall be no excise taxes, duties, or protective tariffs with regard to trade.

((OOC @ Sparta: The Reich is in Hightah which is now no longer a State. It advanced to the Columbian border, briefly crossed, then withdrew and consolidated its Hightah position.))

As Reichsmarschall Kirkland stepped out of his car, he exchanged glances with his driver and motioned him to come along -- he would chance the possible faux pas -- and the young secretary, who carried a writing case and a satchel of documents, and naturally followed.

Kirkland stepped forward with a smart salute -- not the Roman salute of the Reich, but, in deference to his host, in the conventional American manner -- and extended his hand.

"It is my deepest honor to make your acquaintance, Governor Preston. I have the privilege to be Reichsmarschall Wilhelm Kirkland von die Freien Flächen des Amerikanisches Reiches. At your service. And I appreciate your courtesy but, all that being said and done, we can address each other in English as you please."

Kirkland's stern mien persisted, but an astute observer would note it seemed to be more or less a permanent expression, and that he came as close to smiling as was likely.

If permitted, the three followed the governor into his mansion.

((OOC: Pardon if it's "president" and not "governor" :) .))

Columbia-Hightah border, forward Reich command post

"Escorted?" Reichsmarschall Kirkland raised an eyebrow at the message as reported to him, with some timidity, by Signalwoman Schwarz. He hoped that he was not an imposing person to his subordinates, unless, of course, he tried to be -- he far preferred being respected to being feared -- but he had to confess this whole business was unpleasant. Kirkland was steeped from the day of his birth in both European and American military tradition, and firmly believed that an enemy willing to offer an unconditional surrender should appear at whatever pains before the conquering commander, and not vice versa.

None the less, his commitment to averting a longer 'war' -- this had been a pair of skirmishes, and, he realized, it was amongst things vexing him that he felt the victory may not have been well-earned -- or a real war, remained.

He sighed deeply. "Ist gut für jetzt; please summon me a kubelwagen, a driver, and a secretary. We'll trail a white flag and hope not to be shot."

Kirkland found that, despite consternation aplenty, he felt little anxiety. It was said that old men grew more cautious, but, in his case, at least with regard to his own person, he felt much the opposite: He had less life to lose, and increasingly viewed death as an inevitable -- and not far off -- appointment, rather than a terror.

The Reichsmarschall's kubelwagen, driven by a volunteer Wehrmacht leutnant, with a secretary raising her head boldly in the backseat and under white flags, soon sped towards Mount Sinai along whatever disused tracks the scout vehicle could navigate. Weapons excepting sidearms had been discarded and the little car was quite alone. An indignity, certainly, but one Kirkland would suffer to preserve Aryan lives.

Representative Hanna zur Linde stands with her customary and possibly offensive salute.

"The Reichsführers und Volk humbly suggest that the justices be elected directly by the Congress, rather than simply being subject to approval by the Congress, in the interest of Democracy, which all know we hold most dear."
